FreePixel looks at video games as part of the moving image culture. Games are not movies. But games use moving image tradition in their presentation. That is why FreePixel offers a critical look at games and their expressive qualities that grow from the use of the moving image.

Existential Balloon Fight Machinima

Posted by Michael

Via Kotaku – and from Resigned Gamer: a surprising ‘Existential Journey’-8-bit-music-video-machinima. While there are a ton of “serious” machinima films out there, I like to bump into the basic blocky graphics of yesteryear. It is a bit like the I am 8 bit stuff and some of the new games that play with that presentation, like Passage. While I am not a real retro fan, I have to admit that there is a very typical and distinct beauty in the graphics.

This is a style that reproduces a past digital time and world and it can use this references artistically. Nobody expects lip sync in these productions – which can be quite liberating.

Hm, anyone up of a 8bit style mini-machinima festival?
